Torx is a popular brand name for a type of screwdriver with a six pointed tip (sometimes referred to as a 'star screwdriver'). Torx screwdrivers and screws were originally designed to provide extra grip and stability. They also provide a degree of security, especially the tamper-resistant style of Torx screws, which feature a centre pin in the head, preventing the use of even a standard Torx screwdriver (never mind any other kind of screwdriver). Only a tamper-resistant Torx Screwdriver with a hollow tip to accommodate the pin may be used to open these screws, which makes them very secure indeed.
Torx screws are commonly used in automobiles, bicycle parts, building construction, computers, and various other consumer electronics. They are also used on items like personal safes or fixtures in public restrooms. Basically, anytime you want to keep people from disassembling and running off with your stuff, Torx screw heads add an extra level of difficulty for the would-be thief.
A size T8 Torx screwdriver in the tamper-resistant style is required to remove the special screws on an Xbox 360 controller. Fortunately for aspiring controller modders, these T8 Torx screwdrivers are now widely available on the internet, even if you can't find them in your local hardware store.
Once you have your tamper-resistant T8 Torx screwdriver, opening an Xbox 360 controller is quite simple. Use the T8 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the Xbox 360 controller shell together. Once the screws are removed, carefully pop the two halves of the controller apart (with the button side facing downward, unless you enjoy picking up multiple tiny plastic parts off the carpet). The buttons and other components can then be modded in whatever way you desire. Replace all of the screws again with your T8 Torx screwdriver and the newly modified controller is complete!
Even casual gamers may find themselves in the market for a new Xbox 360 controller shell if they chip or damage their original controller casing, want to distinguish their personal controller from others in the household, or just get bored with the plain old standard edition. Call of Duty fans can find shells in multiple patterns and colors of camouflage print. Also available are shells with a Gears of War motif, or more generalized Ninja, Zombie, or Skull designs. Reviving that old controller with a new shell is a budget-friendly option, as it's only a fraction of the cost of buying a whole new controller, and the T8 Torx screwdriver is the only tool necessary to get it done.
If current trends continue, there will come a time when those who play their game console on a standard, out-of-the-box controller will be in the minority. As the options for personalizing become ever greater and the concept controller modification increasingly common, soon there will be a T8 Torx screwdriver in every home!
