From hair length and texture of color and size, guinea pigs come in all kinds of mixtures. If you were to count the different kinds of guinea pigs that today, you can easily reach twenty-five, although no one knows the exact number for sure. Guinea pig breeders are always working to create new types and different guinea pigs by choosing from a male traits Special to mate with a female who has special features. For example, recently guinea pig breeders have worked to introduced a new breed that has no hair at all.
Read this chapter so that you can absorb some information for different types of guinea pigs. You do not need to memorize information that can be confusing, because later in this article you will be able to decide on the type of Guinea pig that is perfect for you.
Genetics and Breeds
You may remember from school biology history of Gregor Mendal who discovered the plant genetics of different types of crossbreeding peas. Mendal as dominant and recessive genes isolated in plants and then cross-pollinated these plants to create large, little, types of sweet, purple and short peas, so too does the dominant breeders combined and recessive genes in guinea pigs. For example, the long hair gene is recessive in guinea pigs, a father shorthaired and longhaired mother will produce a shorthaired baby cavy. Only when both parents have long hair cavy will be born with long hair as well. Same kind of logic applies to genes that determine color, guinea pig behavior and size.

Color Variations
Guinea pigs can be found in many color variations or agouti colors. You can find the guinea pigs who are only mixtures of two or three colors. Those listed in the table are solid colors. The following list describes distinct color patterns that exist for cavy wardrobe.
• Tortoise-shell
Medium-sized patches of red, black, white, usually at least four patches.
• Himalayan
A white body with chocolate brown ears, noses, and legs.
• agouti
Coat seems to shimmer in silver, chocolate, cinnamon or golden color.
• Dutch
Exist in any Self or agouti color, but include a white saddle around Middles and a white stripe running down his nose and forehead.
• Dalmatian
A white body covered with black spots.
• Pinto
A black (sometimes red or red and black) coat with a few strands of white. The legs are usually a solid color.
• Albino
All-white nose and eyes glowing red. Rare.
