Different designs, colors and shapes of helmets really confuse me in the market when I go there for shopping. Mostly people purchase a helmet which matches their personality and the colors of their clothing and bike. But, mostly people buy those helmets which they like on their body. Few of the famous brands of helmet makers are Icon, AGV, Suomy, ZR, Nolan, Thor and Scorpion. You can choose one of them for yourself.
If you are interested in the half helmets then you should know that half helmets are of many types. Some of them only cover the cranium of your body and didn’t give any protection to the other parts of the head. Some comes with a plastic shield that covers your face and protects from the insects and fast velocities of air. You don’t have to wear spectacles while using glass covered half helmets. Actually, these helmets are popular in United States because they look very attractive and dashing. Bikers mostly use these half helmets with nice paints and colors. You may find beautiful designs and pictures on these helmets. They are merely a show off but as far as protection is concerned their performance is not that excellent. So, I recommend if your concern is more about protection then go for full face helmets. If you want to impress your mates and people around you then you can use these half helmets. But, if you admire only half helmets then make sure these helmets are DOT approved. 
People who drive their bikes furiously use full helmets. Sport bikes now days are coming with great power capacities and their manufacturers along with law enforcement agencies are recommending the use of helmets regularly. Most of the helmet manufacturers are using venting system which will allow air to flow in so that while using a face shield you can switch from a clear to a tinted shield in no time. Before buying a helmet, make sure that it is fit on your head and will not move in case of any severe shock.
Motocross helmets are another type which is designed for off road use. They don’t cover the whole face and you might need glasses for the protection of your eyes.
Conclusively, I may say that if you are going to the market to buy a new helmet then wear it before buying it and make sure they are DOT and Snell approved and is completely fit to your head.
